The Official Visitors Program aims to safeguard standards of treatment and care and the rights and dignity of people being treated under the NSW Mental Health Act 2007 while maintaining an independent community perspective.
Official Visitors are appointed by the NSW Minister for Health to visit people in mental health inpatient facilities in NSW and are available to assist consumers with community treatment orders. Official Visitors are independent of the health system and come from a range of cultural, professional and personal backgrounds. They make regular visits to all inpatient psychiatric facilities across NSW, they talk to patients, inspect records and registers, and report on the standard of facilities and services. They liaise with staff about any issues or concerns and report any problems to the Principal Official Visitor and/or the Minister for Health.
Objectives
The Official Visitors Program needed a website that would provide a large amount of information to users from different backgrounds and ethnicities in a concise and easy to use manner. The website should also comply with Australian Government Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
Aside from the public-facing page, a Standard Member Section was also required to allow authorised users access to protected content and documents, with a separate secure login.
Solutions
The Website Marketing Group developed a website for the Official Visitors Program that provided accurate and efficient information delivery and is compliant with government guidelines.
To make the information more accessible to all stakeholders, relevant documents and downloadable publications were made available in several languages and translated into English, Arabic, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog, Turkish and Vietnamese. Again with the users in mind, all text in the website was marked up with a scalable text size.

Results
The website for the NSW Official Visitors Program enhanced recognition and awareness for the program in the community they serve. Aside from providing valuable education to all stakeholders, the compelling visual and information design played a vital role in increasing community participation, motivating and making it easy for people to take action.
