	Google Google is probably the biggest, fastest and most efficient search engine for most purposes. Google's index includes more than two billion HTML pages which are completely refreshed every three weeks.

	AllTheWeb (FAST) Search AllTheWeb.com also has one of the largest indexes of the web, it also enables searches for multimedia resources as well. Its database is refreshed every 9-12 days, making it one of the most relevant search tools for up-to-date information.

	Teoma Teoma adds a new dimension and level of authority to search results through its breakthrough approach, known as Subject-Specific Popularity, which ranks a site based on the number of same-subject pages that reference it; recommended for high relevance search results.

	AltaVista A large search engine with comprehensive coverage and a wide range of power serach command. You can also search for information specific to Australia. However, the database has a very slow refresh rate.

	Ask Jeeves Search Ask Jeeves is a human-powered search tool that aims to direct you to the exact page that answers your question. Jeeves tries to mimic human language, understands word order and can cope with full questions you type in the search box.

	ANZWERS Australia & NZ ANZWERS offers both a directory and search engine service. It is a local Australian search engine that supports Boolean searching. Especially good for Australian information, without cluttering with overseas pages in the search results.

	GOeureka GOeureka is powered by AltaVista and linked to the Australian Yellow Pages Online site, so you also get Australian business, product and service information.

	Web Wombat Australian developed search portal listing pages particularly from sites within the .au and .nz domains as well as providing global coverage. It has links to 2,400 online newspapers, 400 online magazines, world phone directories and world maps.

	WiseNut search WiseNut is setting out to compete with Google as fast, smart and comprehensive. This rapidly-growing search engine has the ability to group all pages from a single site together.

	Open Directory Open Directory is an open source directory catalogued by volunteers and utilised by other search engines, including Google.

	Librarians' index to the Internet Yahoo is the web's most popular search directory, the largest human-compiled guide to the web. It is the best starting point for a search if you are looking for quality websites, not just information.

	Australian Government Information A subject directory compiled by the National Library of Australia. You can find everything you want to know about the three-tiered government.

	About.com The About network consists of hundreds of neatly organised subject guide sites providing links to the best resources on the Net and the fastest-growing archive of high quality original content. The sites cover more than 50,000 subjects with over 1 million pages. Topics range from pregnancy to cars, palm pilots to painting, weight loss to video game strategies.

	Guide to Australia The Guide to Australia is an encyclopaedic collection of essential information about Australia. It contains information as diverse as the Australian constitution, current weather and lamington recipes. This project has been initiated by Charles Sturt University with the ultimate aim to compile links to all major on-line information resources about Australia for distribution via World Wide Web.

	Dogpile Dogpile is a Meta Search Engine that sends your search to a customizable list of search engines, directories and specialty search sites, then displays results from each search tool individually. Though the search results are not likely to be as up-to-date nor as relevant as those from Google, users are impressed by its speed and the comprehensiveness of the results.

	Ixquick Ixquick searches different engines simultaneously, translates a search into each search engines's syntax and eliminates duplicates. Ixquick ranks search results based on the number of "top 10" rankings a site receives from the various search engines.

	Vivisimo search Vivisimo's highly intelligent clustering technology will group the search results into categories that help the user to locate the information easier.
